The End of Ballet

Today was the last ballet session of the year.  Clara started, and then Hannah joined her a few months ago.  For this class, they let the parents in the room, so I was able to take some up-close pictures as I did the previous time.  While I'm glad the girls were able to do it, Meghan and I don't think we'll likely do it again next year, but if either or both of the girls really want to do it, we'll consider it.  Here they are with Ms. Jennifer, who was the lead teacher (Miss Bonnie was the assistant).

A Sunset-Heavy Business Trip

This week I had a two-part business trip, in which I was going to go to both St. Louis and Oklahoma City.  I landed in St. Louis and saw these beautiful sunsets.

In the morning, my sales rep (Mike) and I delivered cakes to anew customer, celebrating our new partnership.  These were 8-inch tall cakes!  They were really almond-y.  Normally that doesn't bother me (though it does Meghan), so I was surprised I felt that way, especially since they came from a popular high-end local bakery.

That night I flew to Oklahoma City for a meeting the next morning at Life.Church.  I love renting from National, because I get to choose my own car, and this time I got an upgrade from the normal options to this sweet Camaro.

I was especially appreciative to have the upgraded car, because I was scheduled to drive home from Oklahoma City, rather than fly home.  So I was going to get a lot of use out of the car, not just driving a few miles around a city, like many of my rental are.  The drive home was in the afternoon and evening, which was perfect to enjoy the sunset (the sunsets must be extra good this week).  Now that I don't have my RX-8 anymore, I really miss driving a sports car, so it was awesome to get to drive one all the way home.  Someday I'll have one again, but for now I'm glad that at least sometimes my rental cars give me that sports car thrill.  But it was a great trip, with two positive business meetings, and one sporty roadtrip home.

4 ½!

Clara turned 4 ½ today. I can't believe how close to five she is. But on the other hand, she has gotten very big of late so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. She is such a performer. She also likes to direct the pretend play she does with the other kids. She is my tv kid and would probably watch it all day every day if left to her own devices. Her favorite show is Phineas and Ferb, but she will watch anything (literally anything, including the financial news. As long as it has the warm glow of tv, she's on board) She frequently gets inspiration from the shows she is allowed to watch and will say, "Let's pretend we are searching for a golden microphone like on PJ Masks". She loves singing and dancing for an audience and breaks into song frequently. She got a microphone for Christmas (like a real one with a mini amp) and she loves it still and will put on shows. She has big feelings at times and doesn't handle disappointment that well. She keeps up with Joshua. If she sees him climb something, she is going up too. This can be hard at times because he is quite  a bit larger than her, but she doesn't let her size hold her back. She is very determined and once she decides to do something, she does it. She loves art. She does not love crafts. She doesn't want to paint whatever the limitations of your mind constrain her to. She wants to create what she wants. The world is her canvas and, if given even  a small opportunity, she will write on the walls, furniture, or whatever else is available. This of course is not allowed in our house and she is only allowed to have writing utensils at the table with paper, but sometimes she sneaks them. I am not sure I will ever bring myself to scrub the "daddy" off of my hallway door frame. She generally is very affectionate and wants to please, not to say she doesn't struggle with obedience like any kid. She is 39 inches tall and weighs about 28 lbs. She is such a sweet and sparkly girl and we love her heaps.

The Rockets

Actual games have started for tee ball, and today was the team picture.  Their team is the Rockets, and here they all are with Coach Scott.  The only problem is that this is a terrible picture.  I'm not a professional photographer, and I get it that it's trickier with baseball because the kids wear caps, but it seems unlikely this is the best way to take a picture of the team when you can't see any of their faces because of the shadows from the bills of the caps.  But this is what we have.  Joshua is on the far right in the back row, and Clara is on the far left in the front row, and their teammates are Brant, Leighton, Cade, Makinna, Tanner, Hudson, Ashlyn, Isaac, Tyson, Brady, Parker, and Summer.

I am an assistant coach for the team.  When we are batting, Scott is at home plate helping each kid hit.  I manage the chaos that is our bench, which consists of making sure all 14 kids get to bat each inning, and that they do so in the proper order.  Because the kids are so young, the focus is on getting everyone to participate.  So in each inning, every kid bats once.  The first kid hits (meaning he or she takes as many swings as is necessary to hit the ball off the tee anywhere into fair territory.  And yes, it sometimes takes many swings even though the ball is on a tee), and no matter the result goes to first base only.  Then the next hits, and he or she goes to first base, and the previous kid moves up to second base.  This continues until the bases are loaded, and then the kid on third will come home.  Basically it's a "keep the line moving" string of 13 straight singles that would make Ned Yost proud.  Then we continue through the entire lineup until the last kid hits.  That kid gets to hit a "grand slam", as after that hit everyone on base comes around to score.  So in the end, each kid will have hit and scored each inning.  We only get through three or four innings each game, so we rotate through the lineup each inning such that by the end of the season, each kid will have had a chance to have the end-of-the-inning grand slam.  Because most kids do hit it on their first try, it moves quickly, but that means it's very fast-paced for me in the dugout.  I have to wrangle fourteen kids who only marginally care about baseball to make sure they bat in order, and that I always have the right kid going up to the plate, the right kid in the on-deck circle (well, there's no actual circle; they just need to be out of the dugout with their helmet on and bat in hand), and the next ones after that ready to go.  We only have five batting helmets, so I'm constantly switching them out, because after a few hitters, there are always three kids on the bases, one at the plate, and one in the on-deck circle.  So as soon as a kid scores, I have to grab that helmet and get it on the next kid who's on deck.  And some kids have their own bats and helmets that they want to use every time, so I have to keep track of that.  And this is ongoing constantly the whole inning, with a new batter as fast as every 30 seconds or so.

But I also would like to take some pictures of my own kids playing, which is hard to do when I'm doing all of that, but today I made a point to get some pictures, focusing on Clara this time.  Here she is at the plate.  Scott seems like a good coach, but in looking at these pictures I'm not sure why he let her stand like that.  She should definitely have her feet shoulder-width apart and not close together like they are.  That makes it much more difficult to swing.  But I'll cut him some slack, because like my job, his is fast-paced too.  And that poor stance probably contributed to this awkward follow-through, which is not exactly textbook.

But it worked well enough, as she hit the ball, and here she takes off for first base with more hustle than you usually see out of her.  And then here she is three hitters later scoring at home plate and getting a congratulatory low five from Coach Scott.

Third Week of May

Joshua had his final soccer game of the season. He had a good game and is excited to play next season.

Monday was a rainy day so we did open gym at Debbie Howard's, which is my favorite gym for open gym, particularly for smaller kids, though my kids aren't that small anymore. The kids had a great time.

This is Clara (I circled her so you can see her). She spent a lot of time on the first level, watching Joshua climbing and feeling bad about not getting up. And then she figured it out and climbed all the way up there. She was so excited about doing it.

All my kids love to help in the kitchen. Clara made enchiladas with me. The experts all say this makes kids more likely to eat the food. That doesn't really work in my life.

We still love the kinetic sand. We probably play with it at least weekly and all three kids just love it. So do I.

Joshua lost his second tooth.

We went to Deanna Rose this week. We had a great time, though I am pretty sure half of Johnson County was there too. We did mining because we had never tried it before. The kids enjoyed it, but not so much that I would probably do it again.

This is a really terrible photo, but this is Clara putting on a "super concert dance show". She spent a long time performing.

Our Own Ice Cream Social

To celebrate the start of summer, our neighborhood held an ice cream social tonight at our neighborhood pool.  After ballet, I took all three kids over to the pool so we could participate.  Unfortunately, they either ran out of ice cream or just ended early, because although we arrived within the specified time frame, they were packing things up when we got there.  The kids were disappointed, and so was I, so I decided to fix the situation by going to Sonic.  So here we are with our own ice cream social, although this one wasn't free, but it was fun.

Chicken in a Chair

Hannah sometimes likes to sleep in her chair instead of her bed at night.  Sometime recently (maybe for last Christmas?) we got her a tiny chair for Chicken so they could each have chairs in her room.  Tonight Hannah decided that since she sometimes sleeps in her chair with her blankets draped over her, Chicken should too.  So here they each are, at bedtime, ready to go to sleep in their own chairs.  Someday she will be over her love of Chicken, but for now it continues, and it leads to adorable things like this.

And before bed tonight, Hannah saw I was going through pictures on my phone and asked me to take a picture of her.  Lately the kids have been into asking me to take pictures of them and then wanting to see the resulting picture on my phone.  So here's the pic, which is really pretty cute.
